A Professional Team Doing Patient, Important Work

Superior Adult Learning was founded as Program Read in 1989 by a handful of educators who believed that no adult in Algoma should be held back by gaps in their literacy or numeracy. Decades later we're continuing to evolve with the needs of our community – meeting our learners where they are and providing them the tools they need to get where they want to go.

We’re passionate about empowering our learners to live the life they deserve – through skills upgrading, connection to community supports and resources, and individualised mentorship and support. Our team of dedicated instructors and tutors come from a wide variety of professional backgrounds and bring to the table experience, knowledge, and a passion for learning and supporting others.

Why It Matters

Helping people gain the skills and confidence they need to participate in our community is the right thing to do, but it also strengthens us.

Lower levels of literacy are linked to:

  • poverty
  • poor health
  • unemployment and underemployment

Higher levels of literacy have a positive effect on our economy and can reduce costs to our health care, social service, and justice systems.

How We Do It

  • Work with Learners to confirm long-term independence, employment, and/or education goals.
  • Assess each Learner’s essential skills.
  • Develop an individualized plan to help learners build the skills they need to achieve their goals.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction and tutoring based on a Learner’s plan.
  • Assess Learners’ progress and adjust plans as required.
  • Refer Learners to other services as needed.

Principles that Shape Every Plan

Learning is a Relationship, not a Transaction.

Learning is a Relationship, not a Transaction.

Learning is a Relationship, not a Transaction.

We get to know you.  Your tutor or instructor will build a connected and professional working relationship with you to ensure you get the most out of the time you spend working toward your goals and that you always have the support you need.

Goals Come First, Curriculum Second.

Learning is a Relationship, not a Transaction.

Learning is a Relationship, not a Transaction.

Tell us where you want to go. We build backward from there — not from a textbook.

Progress at a Pace that Respects Your Life.

Progress at a Pace that Respects Your Life.

Progress at a Pace that Respects Your Life.

Adult learners have to balance a lot in life like family, work, and more. You set the pace for your learning, and we will never ask for more than you can give.

Free Means Free.

Progress at a Pace that Respects Your Life.

Progress at a Pace that Respects Your Life.

No fees, no upsells, no surprise costs. Our funding comes from government funding, donations, and grants — not from learners.
